    Oregon Garden Natural Resources Education Program Lessons

    The goal of these four lessons is to enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of Oregon’s forests. Each lesson guides students in an engaging investigation of forests they can do on their own at home, no matter where they live. The lessons focus on the four topics (adaptations, food webs, wildlife, and healthy forests) that are explored in on-site programs at The Oregon Garden’s Rediscovery Forest.

    Oregon's forests are among the most diverse in the world. The colorful 24-inch by 36-inch poster includes a map showing the statewide locations where the most common conifer and hardwood tree species are found, plus descriptions of ecological and climatic conditions in which they thrive.

    Tree Carbon Tape

    The Tree Carbon Tape helps give middle school students a tangible sense of the amount of carbon stored by Oregon’s forests. It's also a craft. Cut and tape the sections to create a tape that wraps around trees with different diameters.There is also an accompanying teacher guide  designed to help you use the Tree Carbon Tape in your middle school classroom.

    Where's All The Carbon? (Poster)

    This classroom poster illustrates the role of forests and wood products in the carbon cycle. The poster shows the major contributors of carbon into the atmosphere, how forests absorb carbon through photosynthesis and how wood products such as lumber and furniture continue to store the carbon absorbed by trees.

    In this two-minute video, travel into the woods with Mary Castle of Molalla, Oregon, as she shows what it's like to be a forest engineer. She designs the roads and bridges necessary for timber harvest and works with logging and road contractors to ensure the work is done properly.   • Find Your Path: Forest Hydrologist

    In this two-minute video, Bonny Hammons shows what being a hydrologist for the McKenzie River Ranger District is all about. Hydrologists monitor water quality and work with forest managers and operators to help plan forest projects, reduce the impact of logging on a watershed and help restore fish habitat.     In this two-minute video, Simon Babcock of the Philomath School District works in both the classroom and the forest. His students do research in the forest and work on projects related to forest management. As a high school forestry instructor, he teaches about the importance of sustainable forest management, prepares students for advanced study at a community college or university, and exposes them to the variety of career opportunities the industry has to offer.
